Antarctica is miraculous: a remote, white continent of stark and beautiful desolation. For Nature photographers, Antarctica is, without doubt, the gold standard against which all other photography destinations are measured. Nowhere else on earth offers such incredible landscapes and wildlife in such a pristine and remote environment. Best of all, we have timed our expedition in order to provide the best possible chance for fantastic icebergs and great light.
World Photo Travels is joining a team of celebrated Polar photographer Joshua Holko (Wild Nature Photo Travel) on his Antarctic December 2023 Expedition. The expedition is for a strictly limited number of 52 participants plus five photography guides and the Expedition Leader. We have chartered the full ship - the ice class 1A Super expedition ship MV Polar Pioneer with a highly experienced crew so that we can get as close as possible to giant icebergs for the best photographs. Our expedition ship the ‘Polar Pioneer’ is equipped with sufficient zodiacs and crew for all photographers to be shooting simultaneously with plenty of room to spare for camera equipment. So bring what you need!
We invite you to join us on a 14 days (13 nights) photography expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula in December 2023. Get ready for the ultimate return to Antarctica Expedition!
To get an idea of the sort of wildlife and landscape photographs you can take on this expedition please look through the Gallery. You can play the full-screen slideshow even on your phone (just flip it horizontally).
☛EXPEDITION FOCUS: OUR EXPEDITION IS DEDICATED TO PHOTOGRAPHY
The main focus of this expedition will be Antarctic wildlife including penguins, seabirds, seals, and possibly even whales. We also plan to photograph snow and ice covered landscapes and icebergs. Our expedition has been timed early in the season so we expect fantastic icebergs and a breathtaking winter landscape. Experience has shown us that this will give you the best possible photo opportunities whilst giving us ample opportunity for a landing at Deception Island and a cruise through the Lemaire channel.
Antarctica is one of the hot spots for photographing penguins, seals, and icebergs in a great landscape. We will be landing early in the morning and late in the evening to get the best possible light conditions, which you will miss out on an ordinary tourist trip.
We will schedule much longer stops than usual when going ashore in order to provide participants with enough time to get excellent pictures. We will be using five zodiac bots to get ashore or when searching for wildlife at sea.
With 9-10 full days near the Antarctic Peninsula, this expedition is for nature photographers who want more quality time with the Antarctic wildlife and landscape.

We built this itinerary trying to make our expedition the most effective. We have favorite places on the Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, and always try to visit them. Nevertheless, the route depends not only on our desires but also on the current weather and ice situation. At this time of the year, we expect areas like the Weddel sea to be mostly closed with ice, but there will be many other areas for us to explore and photograph including an attempt at the Lemaire Channel. We will take advantage of weather and light to maximize our photographic opportunities at all times.
The MV Polar Pioneer was built in Finland in 1982, and the ship was originally an ice-strengthened research vessel with ice class 1A Super, which is perfect for navigation in polar regions with heavy sea ice. Polar Pioneer has been reborn and was reintroduced to polar waters during 2022 summer season with resounding success.
She was first refurbished in 2000 and converted into a passenger ship for expeditions to the polar regions. In 2021 she was refurbished with works undertaken including an upgrade of the cabins, the main lounge/bar area, and the plumbing/toilet system. Polar Pioneer’s excellent reputation for polar expedition cruising is due to her strength, maneuverability, and size. She is small and nimble, which means she can sail up close to landing sites and venture where other, larger ships can’t. Carrying just 52 passengers, she allows us to offer you a far more personal and intimate experience of the destination we are visiting.
This combination of small size and a strong hull will take you almost anywhere, offering the most amazing adventures. It's the perfect expedition vessel for wildlife viewing and photography. The spacious observation decks provide sufficient space to watch for wildlife or follow the ship’s progress. Or you can come up to the bridge, a perfect location for you to learn from the expedition staff and identify wildlife.
