Svalbard Polar Bear Photo Expeditions, Tours & Safaris

Pack Ice Photo Expedition aboard small icebreakers

When to Visit Svalbard for Photography

The timing of a visit is shaped more by light, ice conditions, and access than by subject matter. From mid-March through early October, Svalbard transitions through distinct phases, each offering different photographic conditions.

Winter (March – Early April)
Experience the Arctic in its stark, snowy beauty. Low temperatures and dramatic winter light create striking landscapes, while polar bears and Arctic foxes add wildlife interest.

Early Spring (Mid-April – Mid-May)
Soft golden light illuminates snow, ice, and glaciers. Polar bears, walruses, seals, Arctic foxes, and reindeer become active, making wildlife photography rewarding under 24-hour daylight.

Late Spring and Summer (Mid-May – August)
Snow melts, fjords and peaks provide stunning scenery, and wildlife flourishes. Endless daylight lets you photograph polar bears, walruses, seals, seabirds, and whales in vibrant landscapes. Ice-strengthened vessels allow safe access to northern pack ice.

Autumn (Late August – Early October)
Golden light, long shadows, and colorful skies make landscapes dramatic. Wildlife remains visible—polar bears on pack ice, walruses and seals along shores, and many bird species remain present.

Pack Ice Expeditions

Explore polar bears in their natural habitat beyond Svalbard’s limits

New regulations in Svalbard prohibit approaching polar bears closer than 500 meters (300 meters in August–September). To ensure meaningful observation and photography, our expeditions operate aboard ice-strengthened vessels carrying just 12 passengers. Traveling beyond Svalbard's 12-mile territorial waters and into the pack ice, where these restrictions do not apply, we can explore the polar bears’ natural habitat with greater freedom. Small group size, experienced crews, and purpose-built ships ensure both safety and unparalleled opportunities for close, responsible encounters with the Arctic’s top predator.

Venturing into the pack ice is an adventure in itself. This vast, ever-shifting expanse of ice, sculpted by wind, tides, and ocean currents, is as mesmerizing as it is remote. While the ice holds the promise of polar bears, our exploration also takes us into deep fjords and past magnificent glaciers, offering endless opportunities to capture the Arctic’s dramatic landscapes and its diverse wildlife.

Beyond polar bears, Svalbard is home to walruses, seals, abundant birdlife, and the elusive Arctic fox, perfectly adapted to this harsh environment by changing its coat from brown to white with the seasons. The surrounding Arctic waters host several whale species, including humpback, blue, minke, beluga, and killer whales. Each turn of a fjord reveals new photographic possibilities, from sculpted ice formations to intimate wildlife encounters, making every moment count.

A high Arctic archipelago between Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is defined by deep fjords, snow-capped mountains, and magnificent wildlife. In early September, true sunsets and sunrises return, signaling the shift from endless daylight. The Arctic shifts into rich, vibrant light. This is the most rewarding time of year to photograph wildlife against dramatic High Arctic landscapes.

To navigate Svalbardʼs new wildlife regulations, we travel aboard an ice-reinforced expedition ship and spend as much time as possible in the pack ice north of the archipelago. Norway's limits on approaching polar bears do not apply there, though we still follow an ethical approach to wildlife photography.
